Maoists have lost credibility, says Sushil

Acting Nepali Congress president Dr Sushil Koirala today said his party did not believe that the accord reached between CPNMaoists and CPN-UML to dissolve the paramilitary structure of the Young Communist League and to return the seized properties to the owners could ever bear fruit.

Addressing a press meet organised by the Press Union Tanahun in Damauli today, Koirala said the Maoists could not be believed as they have been flouting the commit ments made by them. "Their commitments in the paper are different from what they actually practice," he added. Commenting on the recent attacks on different media houses, Koirala said only dictators attacked the press.

"The Nepali Congress always stands for democracy," Koirala said, adding that the NC embarked on its awareness programme to inform people about the wrongdoings of the government.

Responding to a query on delay in statute drafting, he said, "The Maoists, not the NC, are to be blamed for this."

Caste row separates newly-wed

Two days into marriage, Krishna Bishwokarma (19) of Jamune-9, Tanahun district, has been forced to separate from his newly-wed wife Sajani Shrestha (17) of Jamune-1.

Sajani was apparently disappeared by her parents, who were against the inter-caste marriage, yesterday afternoon. The duo had tied the nuptial knot as per the Hindu tradition in Akala temple near Tharpu. The groom's family was present at the wedding.

"We were heading to Sajani's home after her mother said her family would accept our marriage. On the way, about 20 men seized Sajani from Dumrebazaar and took her to an unidentified location. She has gone missing ever since," said Krishna. He said they were in love for two years.

Feeling insecure, Krishna has been living in his relative's house in Markechowk in Abukhaireni VDC. Krishna said he had been receiving death threats after Sajani's abduction. "Talking over phone, Sajani's relatives have threatened to kill me," Krishna said. However, Sajani's maternal uncle said Sajani hadn't married anyone. "This is just a rumour," he added.

Tanahun's Chepangs go green-fingered

All 21 households of the indigenous Chepang community in Chhimkeshwari VDC3 of Tanahun district have turned to growing vegetables and Amliso grass (broomstalks) for their livelihood.

Fifteen Chepang households in Kholagaon and six others in Rasauli are engaged in vegetable and Amliso cultivation and they have become economically self-reliant by selling off their produce.

This became possible after the District Development Committee (DDC), Tanahun, provided assistance for the cultivation of seasonal and off-season vegetables, Amliso grass and beekeeping as a means of poverty alleviation in Chepang settlements.

An official at the DDC Local Development Fund said the assistance has been provided to make Chepang people economically self-reliant.

It is learnt that the Chepangs have also constituted the Chhimkeshwari Small Farmers Community Association and started saving money. One hundred and five Chepang families in that village are earning their livelihood through vegetable and Amliso cultivation. Inspired by them, Chepangs elsewhere are shedding their reticence of new ways of life.

NC student body chief sees king in Prachanda

Chairman of the Nepal Students’ Union (NSU) Pradip Poudel today accused Prime Minister and CPN-Maoist chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ of trying to become a new king.

Speaking at a press meet in Damauli, Poudel saidJustify Full, “The CPN-Maoist is trying to impose autocracy, but it is unacceptable to the NSU. Prachanda is trying to become a new king without the crown.” “The Nepalis, who have taught a good lesson to the crowned king, will not tolerate a king without the crown,” he said.

“This government will not last long because ideas and working style of Prachanda and former king Gyanendra are similar,” he said. “The government will collapse in six months if the Maoists do not mend their ways.” “Maoist leaders are talking about establishing a People’s Republic. This is not acceptable to the Nepalis,” he said, terming the CPN-UML a “puppet” of the CPN-Maoist.

The NSU will stage protests if Maoist leader continue to impose their ideology on the uneducated people, he said.

“The People’s Liberation Army personnel should be dedoctrinated if they are to be integrated into the Nepal Army,” he said.

The NSU chief said the Nepali Congress should play the role of an active opposition. “The CA members, elected by the people in order to frame a new constitution, are doing noting except drawing their salaries and allowances.” He said the NSU will mount pressure for the formation of new Nepal.

Poudel said a programme titled ‘NSU in schools’ had been launched in schools with a view to institutionalising peace, democracy and republic. Another programme targeting youths aged between 20 and 30 years will also be launched soon, he said.

Poudel rejects integration

TANAHUN, Oct 13 - Nepali Congress Vice-president Ram Chandra Poudel has rejected outright the option of integrating Maoist combatants into the national army. "None of the Maoist cadres can be defenders of the nation and the security of all the people is not possible from them," Poudel said during a tea party hosted in his home district where he arrived for the first time since his party quit the government.

Poudel also criticized the Maoists for ignoring the option of rehabilitating their conbatants and continuing with only their rhetoric of integration. "The Maoists are talking only about integration and forget to talk about rehabilitation as mentioned in the peace agreements," he said, "The Maoist combatants should be rehabilitated in society, not in government jobs."

He also urged the Maoists not to politicize the national army for their own petty interests. He claimed that the Maoists were determined to impose a single-party authoritarianism on the country in the name of their "so-called people's republic".

Poudel was greeted with black flags by some members of the ethnic Darai community for the NC's failure to recommend a Darai person for Constituent Assembly membership. The Nepali Congress was supposed to chose one member from the Darai community, according to Dik Bahadur Darai, chairman of Tanahun Darai Society. The society, in a statement, said it would continue protesting against Poudel. Poudel, however, claimed that members of the humble Darai community were being incited by some people with ill intention. "I tried my best to ensure the Darai community's representation but failed," he said.

3,000 bones in student’s home

A student of Ranigaun in Byas municipality-3 has set up a museum showcasing bones in his home.

Prabesh Poudel,17, claims to have collected more than 3,000 bones of animals, including human bones.

He says he has collected human bones and that of dogs, buffaloes, oxen, mice, snakes, snails, elephants, pigs and stags. “I have kept their skulls, legs and other body organs in my sleeping room,” he said.

He said he had kept the bones in his sleeping room to prove that ghosts do not exist. “I began to collect bones after my dog died in 2006,” Prabesh added.

Jhalak, father of Prabesh and a science teacher in a secondary school, said he started helping his son collect bones after he realised his son’s deep interest in the subject and that the bones could be used for his science lessons.

Prabesh says he wants to expand his museum into a research centre and expects support from everyone interested. Prabesh passed SLC this year and aims to study science in the college.

Chief district officer Kashinath Marasini said keeping animal bones is illegal. Assistant forest officer Govinda Pandey also said keeping bones of rare animals is illegal.

“Keeping bones of elephants, rhinos, tigers and bears is prohibited by law,” he said, adding, “We will soon visit Prabesh’s home and decide what to do next.”
